Earthquakes are frequent in Indonesia has shown that many existing buildings can not meet expected performance, even some of the collapse.
Post-earthquake performance of buildings is determined by the extent of non-structural components damage and structural components damage.
As we know that the structure component of the building has a function in the stability of the building while the non-structural components support or services the operational of building.
Non-structural components determine the level of service buildings (serviceability) while structural components will determine the level of building stability (stability).
Damage to structural components will affect the damage to non structural component but not vice versa.
Performance of buildings after the earthquake hit :
1. Operational (Green)
After the earthquake, the building suffered no structural damage and remain operational. Important buildings such as hospitals should have the operational performance, so that after the earthquake, the hospital can still be a center to serve patients and help for the injured.
Characterize the operational performance of buildings after an earthquake is no structural damage at all, and may continue to operate, service can still run well.
2. Immediate Occupancy (Yellow)
After the earthquake, the building suffered no structural damage and could soon be occupied, but only occupied, the service can not operate like a normal, power failure, telephone etc so die. For example hospitals can not do the treatment properly, the bank can not withdraw money, and others.
3. Life Safety (Orange)
After the earthquake, buildings damage may occur both structural and non structural components such as cracks, which is important not happen casualties. The Life Safety performance building could not immediately be occupied again, but it must be repaired first.
4. Collapse Prevention (Red)
After the earthquake, the building was damaged both structural and non structural. The wall broken, the door fell, but should not be collapsed, resulting in loss of life but in small amounts.
5. Collapse (Not allowed)
In this condition the building completely collapse / fall and injure people who live in it. Building can not be used again and should be demolished. This condition is a condition which is prohibited.
